Chad Nye, Ph.D. Executive Director 407-823-6003

Dr. Chad Nye is the Executive Director of the University of Central Florida Center for Autism & Related Disabilities and Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside, in Special Education and has more than 20 years experience in university administration, training and teaching. He is currently directing (along with other CARD staff) a National Institutes of Disability Research and Rehabilitation grant in cooperation with SEDL of Austin, TX to assess employment practices with adults with ASD. The grant is a 5 year project that began in 2008. Dr. Nye is active in promoting the development, production, and distribution of systematic reviews of research that assess the effectiveness of interventions in communication disorders, regular and special education and health related fields. He has completed and published reviews on the effectiveness of vitamin B6 in treating children with autism as well as a review of the effectiveness of sign language instruction for children with autism. In his limited spare time he works on his 1929 Model A car and collects antiquarian books. |

Teresa Daly, Ph.D., BCBA-D Director 407-823-6002

Dr. Daly received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology with specialization in developmental disabilities from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She started her 20+ years of experience serving individuals with autism as an assistant in inclusive preschool program. Prior to joining UCF CARD, she was Director of Training at Emory Autism Center. While at Emory, she was Program Director of the nationally recognized Walden Toddler Program, an inclusive model demonstration program for the treatment of toddlers with autism. She is a licensed psychologist and board certified Behavior Analyst, and has served as a consultant to the National Technical Assistance System on best practices for ASD. She teachers future speech language pathologists at UCF. Her research and training interests include incidental teaching, social interaction, inclusion, and early intervention. She enjoys reading mystery and crime novels, and spending time with her family.

Gesa Barto

After hosting an ASD support group in Lake County for two years, Gesa joined UCF CARD in March 2010, but her colorful career spans 4 decades. Starting out with her Masters Degree in Design and Fine Arts from the University of Frankfurt, Germany, she moved on to becoming an executive and conceptionist in large international ad agencies for 13 years. In the second year of running her own advertising business, she met American classical pianist Tzimon Barto, whose worldwide career she managed from then on. the couple was married for 20 years and had two sons. Firstborn Ori had a variety of obstacles to manage from birth, amongst them Aspergers Syndrome. Tragically, both of Gesa's sons passed away in their youth. Gesa nd Ori worked out an individual "best practice package" that helped him thrive until Epilepsy ended the life of the Eustis High School student at age 17. Supporting parents in becoming good and foreseeing mentors for their child on the spectrum is one of Ges's main goals. The other is re-implementing the arts, wherever possible, as part of the human condition and to enhance our ability to self-reuglate. Gesa is an accomplished artist. Contemporary oil paintings are her "other work". |

Laurie has lived in the Central Florida area since 1980 and has had two years of college majoring in Elementary Education and Business. She has worked in the Central Florida area for the past 25 years in such major companies as Barnett Bank, and Orlando Regional Healthcare Systems and was the assistant to the Seminole County Clerk of the Court. After being a stay-at-home mom for five years, she started back into the work force in January of 2007 at the University of Central Florida. She is happily married to her husband, Bill, and has three children; Elyse, Cody and Ryan and one grandchild, Hanna. When she has spare time, she likes to read, sing and spend time with her family.

Kate obtained her BA in Special Education In 1990, from the University of Florida, and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. She joined CARD in 2007 from Volusia County Schools, where she worked as a clerk, Exceptional Student Education Teacher, and Programs and Placement Administrator for twenty years. Kate's duties included creating the Asperger's Training Model for teachers as well as teaching the behavioral components for exceptional student education and general education teachers in coteaching and consultation staff development while with the public school system. Her interests include Applied Behavior Analysis and Asperger's Syndrome. Kate has taught every grade level from Kindergarten through grade twelve, as well as teaching undergraduate courses for UNCW. She has served as a teacher, mentor, and Program specialist across settings, including consultation, coteaching, self-contained, and resource. Her areas of specialization included Emotional Handicaps and Asperger's Syndrome. Kate and her husband Mikel have four sons. They enjoy church activities, traveling, surfing, and golf and live in the New Smyrna area. Kate is a member of local and state professional organizations, and is a published poet and nonfiction writer, with work appearing in several nationally acclaimed literary magazines, including Crazyhorse and Beloit Poetry Journal.

Jason received his Master's degree in Special Education from the University of Central Florida. Prior to joining CARD, he worked within the Central Florida area as an ESE Teacher, an Employment Program Administrator, and an Employment Support Coordinator. Jason also worked as a psychoeducation therapist at a psychiatric hospital while living in South Florida. He currently holds a professional teaching certificate and has experience working with individuals of all ages with varying disabilities. In addition to his responsibilities at CARD, Jason is an active member of local, state, and national professional organizations. His research and training interests include transition strategies for adolescent and adult populations, social skills training and strategies for all ages, and sexuality awareness training for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Outside of his work, Jason enjoys hanging out with family and friends, his 2 Pugs, watching football, and exercising at his local fitness facility.

Aimara is the parent of two beautiful children: Alex, who has autism, and Karina, his little sister. Aimara is an Architectural Designer graduated in 1985 in Caracas-Venezuela, but also assists at CARD, where she provides extremely valuable help with translation and interpretation for families who communicate in Spanish. Aimara has been actively working with families with children with special needs since 1999, when she became a team member of the Family Resource Specialists at the Early Steps Program, in the Department of Children and Families. Aimara joined UCF-CARD in 2004; her experience and knowledge are a comfort to the families and the UCF CARD staff. She loves to spend time at the beach with her husband Alan and her two kids, going camping with Girl Scouts, going to the movies, and exercising.

Judee Samuels

Judee joined UCF CARD in May 2000, as the Coordinator of Community Relations after working 20 years in marketing and real estate. She is currently finishing a Masters Degree in Health Service Administration at UCF, but she has been actively working in the field of autism since her son was diagnosed with autism in 1992. In 1995, she founded the Autism Society of Greater Orlando. During her seven year presidency, she published the first Central Florida Autism Resource Guide for families, founded “Sea of Dreams,” for children with autism in conjunction with Sea World, and was one of three mothers that formed Princeton House, (now known as Princeton House Charter School). She was also secretary for the Autism Society of Florida. Judee was one of the initial trainers for Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) program in conjunction with the Orlando Sheriff's Department. Judee serves as CARD’s conference coordinator, and also serves as the Director of Providing Autism Links and Supports (PALS), a local non-profit that helps support services provided by UCF CARD. Her goal is to give not only her own son, but every child with autism a quality of life and increase the understanding of typical peers to best support and befriend others with ASD. Judee enjoys gourmet cooking, entertaining, shopping, snow skiing, traveling, reading, and spending quality time with her son.

Kim received a dual Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Education from Rutgers University. She holds a professional teaching certificate and has previously worked as both a regular education and exceptional education teacher. Kim is also a Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst. Prior to moving to Florida, Kim worked as a discrete trial therapist and Coordinator at the Eden Institute and the Bancroft Early Intervention Program in New Jersey, and as a Discrete Trial therapist at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), and was an intern with Dr. Ivar Lovaas, on an inclusion project for the Los Angeles Unified School district. Kim has a comprehensive background in feeding therapy from her experience at Children's Seashore House Feeding Unit in Philadelphia. Her research and training interests include applied behavior analysis, feeding therapy, bully-proofing, positive behavioral support and inclusion. In her spare time Kim enjoys boating, traveling and gourmet cooking.

Kim received her undergraduate degree in Secondary English Language Arts Education, her Master's degree in Varying Exceptionalities, and her Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Central Florida (UCF). Prior to joining CARD, she worked within the Central Florida area as a Teacher and Behavior Specialist. Recently, Kim published her ground-breaking research involving the use of hand-held technology by individuals with autism spectrum disorders in an effort to complete jobs within their communities in the book, Assistive Technology and Autism Spectrum Disorders: Research-Based Practice & Innovation in the Field (Journal of Assistive Technology Outcomes and Benefits). In addition to her responsibilities at CARD, Kim is an active member of several national professional organizations, a member of the Project Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Grant Advisory Committee at UCF, an adjunct instructor for both the College of Education and the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at UCF, and she serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation (JVR) and the editorial review board of Assistive Technology Outcomes and Benefits (ATOB). Her research and training interests include law enforcement awareness training, community inclusion strategies, and sexuality awareness training for individuals with significant impairments. Outside of work, Kim enjoys traveling, sport fishing, and watching the Dallas Cowboys.

Eileen received her Masters degree in Exceptional Education from the University of Central Florida. She is an adjunct instructor for UCF in the College of Education. She has over 20 years of experience working in the fields of Developmental Disabilities and Mental Health in administration, teaching, and training in both public and private organizations. At CARD, in addition to her duties as a coordinator, Eileen also oversees the Sister’s Club, Sibshops, and Camp Two Can summer camp.
