Our February calendar of free parent meetings and educational seminars is taking shape. Dates are set, but some locations are still to be decided. Register by calling Irene at the Center (407) 823-2176, at least one week in advance. 
 
 

1/25/00 Introduction to the Hanen Program: An Early Intervention Parent-Child Interaction Program Dr. Jamie Schwartz. 7:00-8:30 pm, UCF Main Campus

Dr. Schwartz, Visiting Professor, Communicative Disorders Department at UCF will present on the Hanen Center, an innovative parent-child interaction program designed to increase communication of young children. Please call Irene to register and receive room location.

2/5/00 Understanding Educational Law and Parental Rights. Mark Kamleiter, Esq. Orlando, location TBA. Call Irene to register.

Mr. Kamleiter is an attorney with STAND (Statewide Advocacy Network on Disabilities). STAND is a non-profit organization with a commitment to individuals with disabilities and those concerned with their needs. He will present on educational law and issues pertaining to IDEA.

2/9/00 Structured Teaching. Kim Carper, M.A. 7:00pm, Child and Family Consultants, West Melbourne. Call Irene to register.

Kim Carper, M.A., will present an overview of Structured Teaching and how it can be used in multiple settings. Participants will be given an overview of the specific components of Structured Teaching, which include: Physical Organization, Schedules, Individual Work Systems,

Visual Structure, Routines, and Teaching Methods.

2/11/00 Regional Teacher Training. Blinded By Their Strengths: Educating Children and Adolescents with Aspergers and High Functioning Autism. Dr. Diane Twatchman-Cullen. 8:30-3:30, UCF Orlando. See details later in this issue.

2/16/00 Potty Primer Terri Daly, Ph.D. and Marilee Emerson, M.Ed. 7:00 pm, UCF Orlando. This will be a repeat of the basic toilet training seminar. Please call to register.

2/24/00 Creating & Using Parent-developed Student Portfolios to Drive Educational Planning. Marilee Emerson, M.Ed. 7:00-9:00 pm, Galaxy Middle School, Deltona

Ms. Emerson will show parents how to develop a student portfolio that can be used as a tool to ease transitions to new grades schools, and as an aide for IEP planning. Materials will be provided.

3/1/00 Personal Outcome Measures. Eileen Wray, B.A. UCF Main Campus. 7:00 pm.

Call Irene to register. 

Ms. Wray will present an interactive presentation on how to discover what individuals have, and want, in their lives. Participants will learn how to conduct a personal outcome interview for the purpose of quality of life planning and supports. This strategy may be used for program evaluation as well.
